What we do

We provide a family care service equivalent to a family doctor in the US, or a general practitioner in the UK, with the high standards of patient care you would expect in Japan. Our physicians trained, and practiced in hospital medicine (ultimately certifying in anaesthesiology and surgical oncology) before establishing themselves in general practice. Therefore we are able to offer slightly more than a typical primary care might undertake. This includes diagnostic ultrasound, on-site X-ray, and diagnostic upper GI endoscopy in addition to blood tests and ECG’s.Acute conditions that we treat include pain, missed periods, febrile illness, diarrhoea, vomiting, asthma exacerbations etc, but as a primary medical care facility, we are not a substitute for Accident and Emergency services (eg broken bones, acute visual loss, suspected stroke, severe chest pain, severe blood loss etc). We do not provide dental assessments.We realize that sometimes people arrive in Japan without one or more of their regular prescription medications or find that the medications they have brought have expired, or run out. You might not be unwell, but you might feel uneasy about their absence. We are happy to help in this situation but need to point out that formularies in Japan may require us to offer equivalent medications rather than identical replacements. If there are particular considerations to the changes, we have to make these will be highlighted during the consultation. For example, changes in blood pressure tablets may require us to check kidney function and blood pressure a week after starting the tablet. We currently provide vaccination for influenza, pneumococcus and herpes zoster.

We can provide emergency appointments for rapid access during routine surgery hours.

Medical societies in Japan have a different framework for the care of children compared to the Western primary care model, please contact us via email before your visit to discuss your needs.

For international patients who wish to be seen in English, we recommend you to contact us via email rather than through our online booking system. A typical primary care appointment in Japan lasts 10 minutes, if you think your problems will need longer than this, please indicate this during the booking process and expect to be billed accordingly. Please allow additional time for investigations that may be required by your doctor during the visit. Depending on the nature of the complaint, it may be possible to schedule these for a different appointment.

BILLING/INSURANCE PAYMENTS

We accept payment by card (Visa, Master, DC, UFJ and NICOS), or by cash. For tourists, you will be required to settle the account in full and then reclaim these costs from your insurer. To make this process smoother, we will provide a receipt written in English. This can be submitted to your insurance company directly with any additional paperwork they require as part of the reimbursement process. Please make every effort not lose this receipt (or any documentation we provide) as we would have to levy an administration fee to reissue bills, medical reports, or investigation results.

PRESCRIBING

There are several pharmacies nearby. The closest pharmacy is only two doors away. We realize that being unwell overseas is hard enough without having to work out how the pharmacy operates, so if you do need language support, we can help you at this point if needed as well.

For emergency illness, we stock several medicines, such as antibiotics, antiviral agents, painkillers, medicines for stomach ache, and can dispense these directly.

In a pharmacy, the time taken to prepare a prescription depends on the medication. The cost will also depend on the medication. Japan does not have a fixed prescription charge like the UK for example. Although card payments are increasingly accepted in Japan, cash is perhaps still the preferred method of payment.

ACCESS/AMENITIES

We do not have parking spaces. Please use public transport to get here. The closest rail station is Shirokane-takanawa Station (白金高輪駅) which is on the North-South Tokyo Metro line (N03), and also the Toei subway Mita line (I03). The JR pass is not valid on these lines.We are equidistant from the Meguro, Ebisu, and Shinagawa JR stations on the Yamanote line.We realize that when unwell facing the underground system can be a step too far. Some of our patients prefer to take a taxi, should this be the case, please show our address to the taxi driver:港区白金1-25-31　白金商店街のホームマート四の橋の向かい Our clinic is on a single level and is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. A toilet and changing facilities are provided for the use of patients. Wifi is available at our clinic should you need to access previous health records you have stored electronically.

WHAT TO BRING

If you have a Japanese national health insurance card, please bring this when you visit us. For international visitors, it will be a considerable help to the doctors looking after you if you can bring a list of any significant prior diagnoses, ongoing medical problems, current medications, and known allergies to your consultation. Medication formulations (rather than brand names) and doses are particularly important. If in doubt please bring the packet if you can.
